tubes
« on: May 28, 2010, 12:56:39 PM »
I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to flat tires. Yesterday, I got 5 minutes into my session when psssssssssss...flat. I ran over a small staple. Week before that I ran over a piece of glass. Typically, I buy the cheapest tubes I can get my hands on but I'm wondering...is there a better tube out there or am I just unfortunate?

If something is making it through your tire then no tube stands chance. It's just crappy luck at that point.

I swear I go through one tube a week, I'm always blowing up valve stems.

this is well worth it in the long run.
i do an inspection of my area for the first 5 minutes.
once a week or so i sweep it, and i hardly ever blow tires.

File or dremel the hole that the valve goes through in the rim nice and smooth so that it doesn't want to cut into the stem. Round it off a bit.

i wrap my stems with electric tape, but you have to stretch it out and only
1 layer or it doesn't fit through the hole.

My way is more of a permanent fix. If your rim is cutting the thick rubber of the stem, it's probably gone though that electrical tape by the time you've pumped the tire back up.  ;D

your way is definitely a more permanent fix, but if he doesn't have tools or
is not mechanically inclined, he could try my method.
i've never blew a stem after i started doing this.
a chain saw file would work great too.

Okie-doke! I wasn't sure if there was a thicker tube on the market somewhere. I actually ride in a spot that sees little traffic and seems fairly clean. Perhaps I'll dangle a lucky rabbit's foot from my bars for good luck.  :P

Thanks everyone.  -_-

You can always get those self-sealing tubes...or the "goop" stuff you put in the tube yourself.  Works great...a bit heavy.

I've also see people cut up old tires and put the one tire inside another.  Well...vert riders used to do this.
