Front brakes on 48h radial lace???
« on: May 06, 2009, 08:58:53 PM »
Anyone think it's a bad idea to run brakes on a 48 radial laced wheel up front?  Aside from those who would suggest running brakeless on principle.  Do you think it would torque/damage the spokes unnecessarily?  Thanks.

i got a 36 radial laced frontwheel with brakes and honestly never thought about problems with this combo. the last days i had no problems with it, although i used the brake at squeakers for example..
hmmmm, but im not an expert- so is it a bad idea?

LOOK
YOU NEED TO LEARN FRONT TRICKS BY FEATHERING
AND A 48 WHEEL IS FINE
I MEAN THE ONLY THING ABOUT BRAKELESS IS IF YOU
GET THE MOTION AND IDEAS OF FRONT TRICKS DOWN
AND DONT NEED THE FEATHERING

NAME ONE TRICK FRONT WISE WHILE LEARNING THEM THAT YOU
DONT NEED TO LEARN FEATHERING TECHNIQUES
OK
POINT!

Anyone care to comment on the weaknesses of the pattern itself, not how one should go about learning tricks?  I ride my bike around and don't have a rear brake so I'm stuck for safety-sake using a front when the need arises.  My area's mad hilly and heavily traff*cked.

It seems to me that on a cross lace, each spoke is jammed into the hub and the twisting force is countered by the spokes laced in the other direction.  The radial lace seems prone to torquing at the nipple from shear forces.  The "J-hooks" at the bottom are free to swing front to back, not being forced into the hub, so it seems there would be a lot of unfriendly tugging at the nipple.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,
DOUG

no problem. your wheel will not explode by using the brake.

IT IS SORTA OF POINTLESS IN THINKING A WHEEL PROPRLY
LACED EVEN IN RADIAL WILL EXPLODE OVER PRESSURE FROM
USING A FRONT BRAKE..ALL I WAS SAYING IS YOU NEED ONE
TO FEATHER TO LEARN TRICKS AND NO YOUR FRONT WHEEL WONT
EXPLODE WITH THE PRESSURE OF USING A FRONT BRAKE ON
ANY PROPER LACED FRONT WHEEL.

OK DOUGY!

I was scared of radial lace at first too, but I had one on the front,48,using brakes alot, for almost a year straight before I had to even tighten the nipples..It stayed true too..It seemed like every now and then like 1 lone spoke might be loose,no big deal..I would propably even run a radial on the rear now, cuz the 1 I had worked way better then I expected..

Your brakes have nothing to do with the performance of your spokes.  RUN'EM!!

Cool, thanks guys.  Run em I shall.

But I have to ask, because no one calls me Dougy, is it normal to patronize people with legitimate questions?  Maybe I should stay off the boards and limit my interactions to people face to face where there's a modicum of mutual respect.  (and no one has a caps key)

maybe I shouldn't sign my posts either.  That's so last century.
